Remember Voodoo? Look at Him Today!

Many of you may remember poor Voodoo's story. He entered foster care on June 23rd. He was at a NJ shelter and his time had run out. Shortly after he arrived at his foster home, he seemed to start limping and scratching quite a bit. He then became lethargic and spiked a high fever. He was rushed to the vet and it was discovered he had Demodectic mange, as well as hypothyroidism and Lyme's disease. He had to undergo a weekly dip and take antibiotics. He also had to wear a cone on his head because he itched so much and kept scratching himself.

It took some time, but in October Voodoo received a clean bill of health. The mange is gone and his thyroid levels are within normal limits. This playful boy's coat is growing back and, as you can see here, he's feeling great! He will need to take a daily pill for his thyroid, but otherwise he's doing well. He is once again able to go on adoptions and is ready to find his forever home! Visit Voodoo's page...

Holiday Pet Safety Tips

It's time for the holidays! In the excitement of planning gifts and family get-togethers, the family pet may be introduced to dangers in the house that aren't normally there.

Here are some things to be mindful of from Thanksgiving through New Year's:

  • Cooked turkey bones, if eaten, can splinter and cause blockages and intestinal damage.
  • Tinsel, ornaments, wreaths, ribbons and strings of popcorn, and other holiday decorations can cause blockages and punctures in the intestinal tract if eaten.
  • Chocolate contains theobromine that can be lethal to your pet. Other potentially toxic foods include: alcoholic beverages, coffee, onions, salt, yeast, and macadamia nuts, among others.
  • Mistletoe and poinsettia are toxic to animals. Either keep them out of their reach or buy plastic ones.
  • Cover the water in your Christmas tree stand, as it may contain harmful bacteria or chemicals to keep the tree green. Also make sure the electrical cords are well guarded and out of reach so they aren't easily used for chewing.
  • If you burn candles, keep them well away from your pet's reach.
  • Remember that if people come over, this is the perfect opportunity for your pet to try to make an escape. Educate your guests on the proper way to open and close doors to the outside, or make sure that your pet is safely contained.
  • Guests can also slip your pet harmful foods or foods that it isn't allowed to have. Educate your guests on what your pet can and can't eat.
  • Plastic bags can suffocate your pet. A curious dog or cat can stick its head into one, sniff the air out until it adheres to its head, and cause them to panic and suffocate.
  • Burning wrapping paper in fireplaces can cause toxic fumes that kill birds.

The holidays can be joyous for humans, but confusing and stressful with pets when their routines are changed, their surroundings change, and new people come to the house.

Keep your veterinarian's phone number displayed in an easy-to-locate and prominent place, near a phone or on the refrigerator, along with the ASPCA National Poison Control Center's number: 1-888-ANI-HELP. It's also a good idea to locate your local Emergency vet service for after-hours emergencies, and keep that number handy as well.

A little preparation and safety can make the holiday enjoyable for you and your pets. For more information, you can visit the ASPCA National Poison Control Center's Web site.
