Zimba

Zimba's Story as told by his foster mom:

The first time I ever heard about Zimba, it was late May 2002. In talking with one of the shelter's that I call every week they reported that they had a young male husky, who was about 6 months old. He was investigated as a cruelty complaint.

This home that he came from said they found him in a box as a puppy. They first kept him in the house as a puppy, then he started to chew on things so they put him outside to live. The local Animal Control Officer found him outside all the time without food or water. So the family was asked to relinquish him to the shelter. At the shelter he was very timid at first, scared of everyone. One of our volunteers went and checked him out at the shelter on June 1st, 2002. They wrote, "Zimba is a black and white 6 month old male. He was an owner turn in for "Not enough time". He can easily be described as a typical rambunctious pup - very playful, got along with the other dog that was out in the lobby area - also didn't seem to mind the cats when I led him over to them. This one would let you do anything to him - very good disposition. He was a little mouthy, but no teeth. All he wants to do is play! Seems like a nice normal Husky pup in need of some coaching.

That same weekend a family came in and adopted Zimba from the shelter. This family apparently tried to live with him for a month. When they decided he was a little too difficult to work with, they stuck him in a crate for the majority of the day, letting him out briefly for potty and food only. A wonderful girl at the shelter was trying to keep tabs on him. When she had learned about the way Zimba was being kept, she was able to convince them to bring him back to the shelter.

So now back at the shelter again, Zimba just sat and waited. The shelter felt that it was best for Zimba to go no further with adoptions through the shelter and to get him into foster care with rescue.

On July 22nd, 2002, Zimba arrived in foster care. And arriving may be a bit of an understatement. This boy jumped right in with our four huskies and our current foster boy Dorado....and played and played and played.

Zimba is definitely not a dog for the faint hearted. He would best fit in a home that is looking for the ultimate husky challenge. He is a dog that loves to play A LOT!

It would be hard to imagine Zimba going to a home without another energetic dog to play with. He has a lot of energy, and without another dog to play with he will insist that the humans of the house play with him...CONSTANTLY. In other words, Zimba is the Energizer bunny in Sibe form. He's still a puppy at the age of about 8 months old. Basically a wild child.

We received an application from a wonderful home who had one female Siberian Husky named Sunney who desparately needed a playmate. Not much of a surprise that they were interested in Zimba!

On August 24th, 2002, the two met and hit it off almost immediately. The two began to romp and play in Sunney's spacious backyard. She was also even happy to share her big water bowl with Zimba.

Zimba even met the resident birds of the home and was quiet good about ignoring them. It was a perfect match! His new mom and dad (Joanne and John), couldn't have been more pleased with how everything went.

On January 21st, 2003 we received this wonderful update from his new mom:

Just thought I would drop you a line to let you know how Zimba is doing. He really has turned into a big lap dog, he will hop up on the sofa at night, and sit on my lap and watch tv with me. Sunney and Zimba do get along well, the rough housing never seems to stop though.

He loves running in the yard with Sunney, they are so funny, they have their safe spot underneath the steps of the pool, I guess their little rule is that when either one is under there, that means rest time, and stop running for a few minutes. They have dug one big hole that Sunney can get into, but Zimba is still trying to.

One other thing I have to tell you, he finally noticed himself in the glass on the doors of the fireplace, he is just so funny, he just couldn't seem to figure out why there was a dog in the fireplace, he barked, would walk up to the fireplace, and then run away.

He is just such a great dog, we both love him, and he is a big part of our family, as well as Sunney's brother
