Success Stories: Our Dogs

Disco

Disco is one of the "Hazlet 9", a group of huskies that Tails of the Tundra rescued from frightening conditions on July 19th in Hazlet, NJ. Read the story...

Visit Disco's Hazlet NJ page for more details about this sweet girls stay in foster care.

Disco came into foster care at the age of 3. Her gorgeous smile stole the hearts of a special family. She was adopted on August 31st, 2003.

On 9/1/03, her new family writes:

Disco is fine and appears to be happy. I think this whole thing has been overwhelming for her and I am sure that she misses you. She went out late yesterday afternoon, and did not want to come back in the house. I had to get her leash to bring her back in. However, today she is doing well and is beginning to be less apprehensive.

We took her and the rest of the pack for two walks yesterday. She is really good on a leash and very light on her feet. She really seems to enjoy the walks.
We have not explored the dog door aspect of life yet. However, when she wants to go out she walks up to the sliding glass door and we let her out. One of us does monitor her when she goes out, just for a sense of security.

She has taken the spot where she first laid down in the dining room when you were here as hers, and she slept there last night. After she does some exploring, she always seems to go back to "her" spot.

She continues to explore the back yard and just minutes ago she discovered the dog door from the outside, and came into the house through the dog door. Terry says, shouldn't we now show her how to go out the door? I have a feeling she will figure it out herself within the next 48 hours.

Tomorrow is back to work and she will be home alone with only Keebler and Buddy. We think she is very intellegent :-) and we thank you for taking your own time to bring her to us.

Disco has celebrated her one week anniversary with us today. She has mastered the dog door. She has picked a spot that is hers for sleeping and chilling in the dining room. We are still closing the dog door at different times during the day and night. She seems to enjoy going out and in repeatedly when it gets dark. So, at night we sometimes close the door and during the day while at work. At least for now. One week is not long enough to make any assumptions that she is going to stay in the yard. She is fascinated with the neighbors who have children and stares at them while they are outside. They have a two year old girl, who toddled up to the fence. Disco barked at her and scared her, we put Disco back into the house while they were out and closed the dog door until they went back in the house.

We had been discussing a new fence for years. The arrival of Disco has made us decide that when fall comes and the trees lose their leaves, we will get a new six foot fence. Buddy is nosey too, however, he does not have the desire to interact with the object of his curiosity, like Disco does. Buddy is a voyeur, and Disco wants to participate :-) . Supposedly nosiness is a Husky trait.
We walk her every night, and she does not like to have the leash put on, however is very willing to go for a walk once the leash is on her.

She loves to go outside, at least "100 times an hour" according to Terry. She came to us for love tonight for the first time this evening, and she gave Terry a kiss. We gave her a bath yesterday and she was very well behaved. When Terry was spraying down the deck, she ran after the water stream, pouncing on the water and trying to bite the stream. As we get to know her better, we do not think she is a couch potato at all as originally thought :-)

On 9/13/03, her new family writes:

Tomorrow, Sunday, Disco and I are going to the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a week. It is about a four hour drive from here. We are renting a house about a block and a half from the beach. Two friends are also coming and another dog, a three year old female Springier Spaniel.

This has been Buddy's trip since 1999. However, this past May, he really had a hard time jumping in and out of the 4-Runner. He can walk about a mile, and a mile and a half really tires him. (Until the age of 11, he could go and go, a 10K hike was nothing for him.) Anyway Terry and I decided that it is time to pass the vacation fun onto Disco. I know Buddy will be upset and jealous. But we would like to keep him around for a few more years if possible.

Disco is continuing to go out "100 times an hour". However, she has claimed a new spot. She lays on the stoop, right outside of the dog door. She is all about the great outdoors. The rain we have had the past two days does not stop her either. She happy out in the rain. Every time she came in we would towel her off again, she was not wild about that fun like Keebler and Buddy are, however she did allow us to briefly touch her.

She loves to go on walks, but shys away when we pull out the leashes. First couple of times she ran outside and refused to come in. We are wise to that trick now. But once the leash is on, she prances or as Terry once remarked, she has that show dog walk. She also exhibits that walk when she cruises around the back yard.

She is still people shy, but she is beginning to tolerate us more now. Several times recently in the morning, we found her sleeping next to Keebler.
The only thing she chewed was several bottles in a case of water. Only one bottle spilled, because she does not chew the bottles, she was chewing off the caps. :-)

We are definately keeping her, and the name. Several of my friends have told me that when they see me now at work, some sort of Disco song immediately comes to mind :-)

On 10/6/03, her new family writes:

Disco has been with us for five weeks now. She still loves the great outdoors, a good hike, and a snack. She likes limited love and the dog door. She seems to enjoy monitoring the neighbors on three sides. After our trip to the Outer Banks, she does not object to having the leash put on. She now sees the leash as a good thing. We had to leave the Outer Banks on Tuesday as opposed to the following Sunday. And the bonding I had hoped for was only partially accomplished. I was walking her at least four times a day, and she was sleeping in the hall in between the bedrooms.

We think she stays in the house most of the day but goes out in the evening and at night. Living up to her name of Disco and loving the nightlife :-) She does occassionally slip up, went in the house this morning, and just yesterday I was thinking she had overcome that habit.

She likes to chew on plastic bottles, but only the tops and if they are full of liquid. We have tried to introduce toys to her but she does not get the toy concept yet.

I found out from the TOTT Adopters Messsage Board that many of the Hazlet Nine have been adopted. Terry and I think of these dogs often.
