Damona
opened our hearts to us on Valentine's Day 2004, when we realized
we couldn't let a wonderful girl like her spend one more day in
the shelter! Damona's original owners had to give her up and turned
her over to the shelter, where she wasn't getting enough exposure.
At age 7, we knew that this special girl needed some better PR!
Damona
quickly learned what to do with other dogs – play! (She had
previously lived with 2 kids and a cat, but not other dogs.) She
had to learn how to tell other dogs she wanted to play and with
practice did just fine. She also showered everyone she met with
husky kisses to show how happy she was to be out of that shelter.
She
had a couple of false starts in adoptions… her humans missed
her potty signal and she began to have accidents. Her foster homes
worked very hard with her to make sure she communicated clearly
to them, and tried to teach the adopters those signals, but there
was some miscommunication and so Damona came back to us. All she
wanted was someone who would understand what she was trying to tell
them, and to love her enough to understand if there was a mistake.
On
February 27, 2005 Damona found her forever home
in New Jersey with her new human Joe, and this time we know she's
there to stay. Damona had a couple of accidents early on, but Joe
understood that she was nervous and learning to live in a new place,
and everything is going really well now! Joe and Damona take frequent
car rides to PetsMart, which she loves, and she has given everyone
she has met those sweet husky kisses. Damona will even give Joe
a play bow so he knows when she is ready for some fun! After a long
journey to get to her forever home (having been adopted in Maryland
and Pennsylvania previously), Damona is there to stay.

Update
from Joe – 8/16/05
Damona has
settled in very nicely here. Her presence is definitely noticed.
Each morning I get the Siberian “woo-woo” serenade with
an occasional bark thrown in. She loves taking a car ride to the
convenience store and has grown very fond of mini Slim Jim’s!
Throughout the day she picks at her food and the treats that she
has strategically hid throughout the house and the car! It is not
uncommon to sit on the couch, or in the car, and find a dog treat
stuffed in the cushions! Wherever I am, Damona is close by following
my every step. At night she sleeps in the hall as if she were on
guard.
“Mona”
has not had any accidents in the house and has free access to the
house day and night. She also has a large fenced area outside to
romp and play. While she loves her outside time, the local possums
may disagree. It seems that possums may be considered a Siberian
delicacy!

Damona's
dad passed away and she came back into foster care on 7/26/08. Read
more about her next adventure here.
